My technical writing is usually illustrated sequential instructions. My philosophy regarding step-by-step instructions takes into account that my audience will often resist reading lengthy paragraphs, so I try to limit each sequence to one or two sentences.
Due to the complexity of the tasks, I must often illustrate each step with a CAD drawing or annotated photo that provides at-a-glace revelations that keep the reader interested and on track with a clear understanding of the task.
All of my illustrations have figure numbers and are cross-referenced with the procedure. My procedures are all well indexed and appear in the table of contents in a logical fashion.
